Latina/lingua project

Filed under: ELearning — Andrea Ximena @ 12:57 pm

This week the Latina/Lingua project has started with a team of people participants of the Latina summer course and belonging from different countries. Our major goal is to translate the Latina web site from english to another language. It is necessary to consider many aspects that can make us do an effective job and an accurate translation. Also is very important to consider the funtionality of the site. The languages included for the translations are Polish, Ucranian, Nepali and Spanish with the collaboration of Ewelina, Olena, Murari, Ambica and I respectively.

As I said before many aspects has to be considered when working in a project like this, first of all is important to have skills regarding the use of the informatic tool, in our case we are using the multiuser wordpress, although is a tool very user oriented everyone of us need to follow some guidelines in order to work effectively. In this sense, the instructions given by Tord the director were essential in order that all of us followed the same steps and can focus more on the content than in the practical issues regarding the tool. However, sometimes when some of us have a technical problem we received support from Tord or we tried to help each other and fix it very quickly.
Also, time was an important aspect, because this project is carried out in one week, it wasn’t necessarily to make the most pages translated in one day, as Tord said the important is the quality of them. However I tried to have a goal per each day and concentrate on that so at the end of the week I can have done at least the most part of the content.

Collaboration was important during this project, despite, each of us were working separately in every site for each language, many times we needed feedback from each other in practical and content related, also we have time to learn from each other about the other languages and cultures. For example, we made translations of some words in all the languages and we share how to pronounce it correctly.
In order to perform effectively, the use of google translate was very useful. I also get support from dictionaries online like the cambridge dictionaries, and my classmates feedback for some of the words meaning.

Thinking about the learning reach from this project, it was also sustainable. When translating is necessary to read the content even when you get support from the tools like the google translate. Reading was part of the learning this week, all the topics covered in the site are very interesting. While translating the reading resulted very fruitful for us, sometimes it is necessarily to describe the same in your own language form so that makes you reflect on the content.
